Traffic Speeding in Great Barton
Your Parish Council is very aware of the residents’ concerns about speeding traffic that could lead to serious safety issues as well as noise pollution. That has been exacerbated over the last few years by significant roadworks leading to excessive use of the A143 by HGVs at all times of the day.
Over the last 3 years we have introduced the following Initiatives:-
Speed Indicator Devices/Vehicle Activated Device
We have 3 devices, 2 permanently sited on the A143 and Mill Road and 1 movable device between sites on Fornham, East Barton and Thurston Rds. These have had a significant impact on reducing vehicle speeds as shown in the table below:-
Unfortunately, there are still too many people who ignore the speed limits!
Speedwatch
There are 10 of us (working in groups of 3) on behalf of Suffolk Police who take it in turns to go out once a week for 1 hour across 6 locations in Great Barton using a radar gun to record the speed of motorists exceeding 34 mph. The information is sent to the police who send warning educational letters to the motorist, in excessive cases they will also receive a visit from the police. Over the last 2 years we have reported 521 speeding motorists. Although these do not lead to prosecutions the Police Camera Team do visit Great Barton 3-4 times a month, which can lead to 15 prosecutions per visit.
It would be fantastic if we had more volunteers so we could organize more sessions, all equipment and training are provided. If you are interested, please get in touch!
